As the "Hub of Southeast Kansas," Chanute enjoys some of the finest recreational, cultural and business opportunities in the state.
Located in the beautifully renovated Santa Fe train depot are the Chanute Public Library and the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum, which tells the adventurous life stories of two wildlife filmmakers, photographers and authors. The Chanute Art Gallery is a unique cultural treasure not found in many small towns. In addition to an old-fashioned soda fountain and wonderful shopping, historic downtown Chanute now has the Chanute-Wright Brothers Memorial. Annual festivals include Chanute's Mexican Fiesta and Artist Alley. Chanute maintains five parks covering 300 acres offering a 40-acre lake for boating and fishing, a 3.11-mile hike/bike trail, a golf course, skate park, ball diamonds, playground equipment and pavilions for gatherings.
